Overview

Introduction to the Disease

Herpes zoster (shingles) presents as a painful vesicular rash and is caused by reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus within the dorsal root or cranial nerve ganglia1. Post herpetic neuralgia is the most common complication of herpes zoster and is one of the most intractable painful disorders. Herpes is a very common skin disease caused by HSV that can affect mouth (oral) and/or the area around the penis or vagina (genital), upper thighs or buttocks.

Virus VZV and HSV are widespread human pathogens, with about 60 to 90% of the population latently infected by both viruses by adulthood. In India, >30% of persons >15 years of age are susceptible for VZV infections.

Herpes zoster is viral infection that occurs with reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus. It is usually a painful but self-limited dermatomal rash. Symptoms typically start with pain along the affected dermatome, which is followed in 2-3 days by a vesicular eruption.

Famciclovir 500 mg or 750 mg three times daily for 7 days, is an effective and well-tolerated therapy for Herpes Zoster that decreases the duration of the disease’s most debilitating complication, PHN.

Genital herpes is a common sexually transmitted infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). Sexual contact is the primary way that the virus spreads. Genital herpes can cause pain, itching and sores in genital area.

Oral Famciclovir across all doses was found to be an effective and well tolerated in patients with Recurrent Genital Herpes and Varicella zoster virus infection (Chickenpox).

Single-day Famciclovir was like 3-day Valacyclovir in both efficacy and safety, representing a more convenient treatment for adults with Recurrent Genital Herpes.

Chickenpox, also known as varicella, is a highly contagious disease caused by the initial infection with varicella zoster virus (VZV). The disease results in a characteristic skin rash that forms small, itchy blisters, which eventually scab over. It usually starts on the chest, back, and face.

A single dose of Famciclovir offers a safe and effective alternative for patients with suspected / confirmed HSV and VZV infection.

Herpes labialis, commonly known as cold sores, is a type of infection by the herpes simplex virus that affects primarily the lip. Symptoms typically include a burning pain followed by small blisters or sores.

Famciclovir given twice a day is as effective and well tolerated as high-dose Acyclovir for mucocutaneous HSV infections in HIV infected individuals and has the convenience of less frequent dosing.

Recurrent herpes simplex labialis, also known as oral herpes, is an infection of the mouth area caused by the herpes simplex virus. These are commonly known as cold sores or fever blisters.

A single dose of Famciclovir offers a safe and effective alternative for patients with Recurrent Herpes Labialis.

Immunocompromised cancer patients are susceptible to infection by many viral pathogens. The development of infection remains a significant source of morbidity and mortality in the oncology patient.

Famciclovir results in clinically and statistically significant reductions in the symptoms associated with HSV infection and symptomatic and asymptomatic shedding of HSV among HIV-positive persons.

Bell's palsy causes sudden, temporary weakness in facial muscles. This makes half of face appear to droop. Smile is one-sided, and eye on that side resists closing. Bell's palsy, also known as facial palsy, can occur at any age.

Treatment with steroid + Famciclovir was more effective than treatment with steroid + acyclovir in patients with severe facial palsy. Famciclovir may be the antiviral agent of choice in the treatment of patients with severe facial palsy.

Eye herpes, also known as ocular herpes, is an infection of the eye by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). The most common type is called epithelial keratitis, and it affects the cornea, the clear front portion of eye. In its mild form, eye herpes causes: ... tearing of the cornea surface.

Famciclovir 500 mg three times daily demonstrated efficacy similar to Acyclovir 800 mg five times daily in the treatment of Ophthalmic Herpes Zoster but provides patients with a more convenient dosing regimen.
